The Minimum Requirements To Become A Strong Tester

To have the potential to be a strong software tester, you must be able to perform these three actions: Think. Learn. Do.

Think

• Generate questions.

• Seek new information.

• Design experiments (a subset of “Generate questions”).

• Construct a mental model.

Learn

• Consume information and either: a) distill something from it, or b) actively decide nothing useful can be distilled from it.

• Differentiate between what the speaker/writer wants you to think, and what you actually think.

• Identify why you think what you think.

• Incorporate that thing you distilled into the other things you know (in other words, update your mental model).

Do

• Execute experiments.

• Report results (and other learnings).

• Ask questions.
